Why Does "Dirty Air" Ruin Your Ride? Understanding the Science of Buffeting
[REWRITTEN OPENING WITH INTERNAL LINK]
If you’ve ever felt like your head was a tetherball being smacked around at 70 mph, you’ve experienced the dreaded "bobblehead effect." This isn't just an annoyance; it’s the result of poor air management creating a vacuum of turbulent air behind your screen. At Klock Werks, we engineer solutions that transform your riding experience from exhausting to effortless. Before you spend another mile fighting the wind, you can Shop our full Flare® Windshield Collection here to find the race-tested design that actually manages airflow for your Harley-Davidson, Indian, or custom bagger. Our mission at our shop here in Mitchell, SD, has always been to provide parts that Fit, Function, and Look Great, ensuring you spend more time looking at the horizon and less time fighting your helmet.
What Causes Helmet Buffeting and Wind Noise?

Buffeting happens when turbulent air smacks into your helmet at speed. Stock windshields often send air straight at your head or swirl it around in a way that creates pressure waves. That means constant helmet shake, loud wind roar, and less focus and comfort on the road. It only gets worse the faster you go.
How the Klock Werks Flare® Fixes It

The Flare® features a patented "flip" at the top of the shield that kicks air up and over the rider, creating a calm pocket of air behind it. That means less turbulence hitting your helmet and a quieter, more stable ride.

The patented side “hips” redirect wind outward and create downforce, adding front-end stability and reducing side pressure. It’s not just a better feel but it’s a safer, more comfortable ride, especially on touring bikes like the Road Glide or Street Glide.
The Flare® is backed by wind tunnel testing and thousands of road miles. This isn’t marketing hype. It’s air management, engineered for real performance.
Rear Benefits You’ll Feel Instantly
Clearer Audio at Speed
With smoother airflow comes real-world audio gains. Rider or passenger, you’ll actually hear your speakers again. With wind pushed up and away, your tunes cut through clean with no more fighting to hear lyrics or directions over the wind.
Pro Tip: Sound still not loud or crisp enough? Check out Dynamat®! Our fairing kits are custom cut to fit perfectly resulting in reduced wind noise and vibrations and improved audio clarity.
Less Rider Fatigue
Reduced wind pressure on your chest, head, and arms means you’re not white-knuckling the grips to stay stable. You can ride longer, stay focused, and feel better when you arrive. Your ride becomes something you enjoy and not something you endure.
Passenger Approved
The smoother airflow created by the Flare® extends back to your passenger too. No more helmet slap or shouting over the wind. It’s a more comfortable experience for both of you.
Improved Stability
The Flare®’s built-in downforce adds front-end stability and reduces front-end wiggle, especially when loaded down or in crosswinds. That translates to more confidence at speed and better control when it counts.
Style That Performs
Function doesn’t have to be boring. The Flare® looks as good as it rides. Sleek, aggressive, and available in different heights and tints to match your stance and your style. It gives your bike a custom edge without overdoing it.
Built to Take the Hits
Klassic tint Flare® Windshields are made from hard-coated polycarbonate and are far more impact-resistant than acrylic shields. That means it’s ready for bugs, rocks, and unexpected weather without flexing, cracking, or fading out. It's durability you can count on. However, our Kolor Flare® Windshields are made of acrylic, our only option to achieve that fluorescent POP of color our riders have also come to know and love.

FAQ | People Also Ask
1. What is the difference between wind "blocking" and "air management"? Wind blocking simply uses a flat surface to stop the wind, which creates a low-pressure vacuum and turbulence (dirty air) directly behind the shield. Air management, the core of the Flare® design, uses patented "hips" to create downforce for stability and a "flip" at the top to redirect air into a clean, calm "bubble" for the rider and passenger.
2. How do I know which Flare® height will eliminate my buffeting? The "Flare® Fix" works best when you choose a height you can look over, not through. We recommend a height where the top of the shield is level with your nose or mustache area. This allows the "flip" to kick the air over your helmet while maintaining a clear view of the road. To be 100% sure, we suggest using our "Try It Before You Buy It" program at a local dealer.
3. Does the Flare® Windshield really improve motorcycle stability? Yes. Unlike traditional shields that can create lift, the patented "hips" on the Flare® act like a spoiler on a race car. This design creates downward pressure (downforce) on the front end of the bike, which increases torsional rigidity and helps the motorcycle track straighter, especially when passing semi-trucks or riding in heavy crosswinds.
4. Will the Flare® Windshield help me hear my stereo better? By eliminating the turbulent "dirty air" around your head, the Flare® significantly reduces wind noise. Most riders find they can lower their stereo volume by several notches and still hear their music much more clearly at highway speeds, which also reduces long-term ear fatigue.
5. Can I install the Flare® Windshield myself, or do I need a mechanic? The Flare® is designed as a direct bolt-on replacement for your factory shield. Because we use precision 5-axis laser cutting, the mounting holes align perfectly with your stock fairing. For most Harley-Davidson and Indian models, installation takes less than 10 minutes using basic hand tools and your factory hardware.
