Build Breakdown: Custom 2006 Harley-Davidson® Doyle's Dyna

Some builds start with a parts list. This one started with friends. Doyle's Dyna shows how a simple plan, thoughtful upgrades, and the right foundation can create a bike that rides as good as it looks.

The Story Behind the Dyna

“Friends”. That single word sums up this entire project.

While visiting longtime friends Tom and Kathy Austin in Eleva, Wisconsin, Brian Klock learned the story behind a motorcycle Tom owned. Tom has been dealing with dementia, something that hits close to home for Brian after losing his own father, Roger, the same way.

Kathy mentioned she hoped the bike could be moved along to avoid future stress for the family, so Brian asked Tom what he had into it and brought it home, removing a potential burden and keeping things simple.

The next chapter came together quickly when Doyle Thompson, a longtime friend of Klock Werks, took interest in the Dyna. Doyle has built motorcycles for years, beginning with his first Street Glide, but bigger bikes have become harder on his knee. The Dyna checked every box. It didn't hurt that it was blue.

Plans were set in motion immediately.

Keeping it Simple, Keeping it Rideable

From the start, the goal wasn’t an overbuilt showpiece. The Klock Werks Krew focused on creating a nimble, comfortable motorcycle with a strong foundation that could evolve over time. The team laid out plans to add an FXRP Fairing, polish the factory wheels and keep the factory paint to save time and stay true to the bike.

The team used the stock hand controls and dressed them up with chrome, paired with a mid-bend handlebar and stock-style risers to maintain full functionality. Performance Machine grips were chosen for improved riding control and comfort.

While the wheels were at Elite Polishing in Lincoln, Nebraska, new Metzeler tires were ordered for both ends, and the fork legs were sent to the team at J&D Plating for chrome. To improve ride height and comfort, 12-inch Drag Specialties rear shock absorbers were added.

The Krew intentionally kept the stock pegs, seat, backrest, and many other factory components in place to prove that every build doesn’t have to be over the top. The idea was to establish a solid base motorcycle first, leaving room for future upgrades if desired.

Doyle has never stepped away from horsepower, but this build kept things balanced with a Cobra air cleaner and a Cobra chrome 2-into-1 exhaust. In true fashion, he upgraded the motor to a 98" Revolution Kit with some mild head performance as well.

Paint, Finish, and Visual Details

Paint and finishing work was handled by Josh Miller at The Factory Match in Tea, South Dakota. The Harley-Davidson® 2006 factory color was matched, accented the battery and electrical covers with a pop of blue, and sprayed the Klock Werks FXRP Fairing along with a 19'' Fender Fit Kit for Dyna & Softail in the same hue. The steel fender adds torsional rigidity, acting much like a fork brace and noticeably improving handling, especially when paired with fresh fluids and seals after chroming.

Chrome hardware was added throughout the bike, along with a Klock Werks derby cover and points cover. The Krew at Klock Werks made up of Danielle Pray, Ryan Anderson, and Shelton Einerwold made quick progress on this project and was ready to ride to Sturgis.

Finishing Sturgis Touches

Sixty days later the Dyna was completed and on display in the Black Hills. Of course, they happened to be positioned across from A10 Moto. Doyle made his way over and had their team install a Baja Design LP6 headlight and blue LED backlighting, giving the bike a striking presence even while standing still.

What’s next for this quick, nimble makeover? Stay tuned. Rumor has it Doyle’s nephew, Hunter Dodd, has his eye on it.

Friends helping friends, that’s what this build represents. Thank you to Tom + Kathy Austin and Doyle Thompson for their unwavering support of Klock Werks for more than 15 years!
