Build Breakdown: Custom Harley-Davidson® Electra Glide Penny Bags

What started as a road trip turned into one of Klock Werks' most meaningful builds. Penny Bags shows that creativity, passion, and a little humor can turn any bike into something unforgettable.

Custom 2000 Harley-Davidson® Electra Glide

This story is a little different. We're switching things up and handing the mic to Dave - one of our shipping specialists in the Worldwide Distribution Center here at Klock Werks.

Where it All Started

On a trip to California to help a co-worker move back to Mitchell, S.D., Brian Klock and Dave couldn't help but notice the semi-trucks on the highway - each one showing off its own style, color, and attitude.

One in particular, an orange-toned Peterbilt, caught Dave's eye and sparked an idea. By the time they got back to Mitchell, the "budget build" was underway.

Building Something Different

The idea was to transform a 2000 FLH into a fun-to-ride, performance bagger as Dave's first official build. He began sketching out designs inspired by the semi-trucks, focusing on the bold lines, industrial finishes, and the individuality that made each truck unique.

He cerakoted stock parts in gold, from the polished-lip nine-spoke "wagon wheels" to the forks, and handed his design to Shane Quick at Altered Ego Custom Paint in Virginia. Shane brought the concept to life with off-white, black, and gold accents that accents this Batwing fairing motorcycle lines.

To complete the transformation, the team added Klock Werks tank dish, rear filler panels, and fenders for extra style. Meanwhile, Danielle, Dave's fiancée and one of Klock Werks talented technicians, handled motor updates and suspension upgrades from the FatBook and Drag Specialties catalogs.

The Turkey That Tied it Together

The turkey on the back fender? That came from a running joke in the shop. Around Thanksgiving, Danielle brought some holiday decorations to the shop - including a goofy turkey prop. By coincidence, that turkey matched the bike's gold and orange tones perfectly.

Everyone had a good laugh, but the more they looked at it, the more it felt right. Shane called in artist Jeremy Seanor of Luckystrike Designs to add his artwork of the turkey, reimagined as "Mr. Penny Bags", a clever nod to the Monopoly character.

The turkey became part of the build's personality - showing the lighthearted side of the shop and Dave and Danielle's shared story. As the bike came together, so did their relationship.

More Than a Build

When it came to naming the bike, Penny Bags felt right. It was proof that vision, teamwork, and heart can turn a $4,000 used bike into something unique.

With help from Shelton, another employee here at Klock Werks, he upgraded the fairing with Rockford Fosgate audio and Autometer gauges, and LePera seats. The FUN factor on this bike build has been the collaboration of so many great brands, the team, and friends who have jumped in.

Penny Bags is a story of inspiration, passion, and connection. It shows that great builds don't always start with big budgets - they start with great ideas and a great team.
